Frequently asked questions
Registration, divisions, practices, games, and league expectations.
What is GRIT?
GRIT is a local youth girls' and boys' 5v5 flag football league focused on fundamentals, confidence, sportsmanship, and a well-organized game-day experience. We expect players, parents/guardians, coaches/team reps, officials, and spectators to be positive, encouraging, and respectful at all GRIT events.
When is the next season?
Spring registration opens December 1. Season dates, camps, and game days will be posted on the schedule page.
What are the rules of 5v5 flag football?
GRIT uses a national standard 5v5 ruleset with certain league adoptions and policies. You can view the current rulebook on the 5v5 rules page.
What divisions are offered?
GRIT offers Girls and Boys leagues, grouped by school grade:
Girls: K-2nd • 3rd-5th • 6th-8th
Boys: K-1st • 2nd-3rd • 4th-6th
Divisions may be combined or adjusted based on final registration numbers.
How is division placement determined?
By your child's grade this school year. The registration form picks the division from their league and grade.
Can my child play up a division?
Requests to play up may be considered, but approval will depend on safety, roster needs, and league discretion. Players cannot play down a division.
Are schedules and divisions final once posted?
Not always. GRIT may adjust schedules, divisions, team counts, and postseason format based on registration numbers, field access, weather, or other operational needs.
What format does the league play?
All divisions play 5v5 flag football in a non-contact format using rules based on a national standardized ruleset, with GRIT league adoptions and clarifications where applicable.
How big is the playing field?
The field is smaller than a full football field and is designed for 5v5 play: 25 yards wide × 64 yards long, including two 7-yard end zones. See the 5v5 rules.
When are games played?
Games are on Saturdays. Final schedules depend on registration totals, division size, field capacity, and final calendar approvals.
How long are games?
Games use two 20-minute running-clock halves with a 2-minute halftime. Total time at the field may be longer with warm-ups, transitions, and brief delays.
How often do teams practice?
Teams practice at least one weeknight a week, plus a game-day warm-up before Saturday games. Standard practice days are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings; times vary. Coaches post practices in the GRIT app.
When are team assignments and practice schedules released?
After registration closes and final team counts are confirmed. Families get their team, schedule, and team chat in the GRIT app.
What if my child has never played before?
That’s completely okay. Beginners are welcome and even encouraged to play. GRIT is designed to help athletes learn the game, build confidence, and improve in a positive, structured environment.
Will everyone get equal playing time?
GRIT’s goal is a positive, developmental experience for all athletes. Playing time may vary depending on team size, game situations, attendance, and coaching decisions.
How are teams formed?
Through a combine and draft. Before the season, GRIT holds a combine day where players go through drills while coaches observe; then coaches draft players to build balanced, competitive teams.
What equipment does my child need?

- Cleats or athletic shoes (no metal cleats)

Can parents coach?
Yes. Parents and other interested adults may apply to coach, and may be asked to complete screening and training. See Be a coach.
What happens if weather affects practices or games?
GRIT may delay, reschedule, shorten, or cancel events due to lightning, severe weather, field conditions, or facility issues. Families get changes right away in the GRIT app, and they're posted on the schedule. Makeup games or practices may be offered when possible, but aren't guaranteed.
What happens if my child gets hurt?
If a player appears injured or unsafe to continue, they may be removed for evaluation. Parents/guardians are responsible for medical decisions and any related costs.
What is the refund policy?
Refunds follow the GRIT Refund Policy. Please review it before registering.
What behavior is expected from parents and spectators?
Support all athletes, respect coaches and officials, and follow GRIT’s Code of Conduct. Unsportsmanlike behavior, repeated sideline issues, or unsafe conduct may result in removal from the venue and/or league discipline.
